I am basically a very objective person. I don't assume that the United States government is always going to do the right thing. I learned in college to analyze information and make my own decisions about what I thought. I think blind patriotism is an extremely dangerous belief system to have. I think an alert, well-read, questioning public produces a society that is all around better and lives in more harmony with the other nations of the world. I found that article on lucianne.com, a very conservative website. Lucianne is Lucianne Goldberg, conservative columnist Jonah Goldberg's mother. They offer their own take on news stories, but then have a section where anyone who is a member can post stories from the news. It is a quick way to stay really informed about what is happening all over the world. I get there by going to the Drudge Report and scrolling down on the left where there are lots of various news sources, and clicking on it. Hardly a journey through far leftist journalism or anything! If the United States government is a good thing, then the light of day should show that. If it does not, that is not my problem. If people read a bit more widely through the daily world press, perhaps they would not be so totally puzzled that everyone on earth does not love America unconditionally. We don't even get to see video of all the Iraqi civilians bombed to death (by our bombs). Our press is extremely controlled now, not a free press at all. I don't think this is healthy for America or Americans, so whenever I find something that credibly reports another point of view, I am very happy to share it here. Incidentally, I did not criticize my country by posting that piece. I didn't say even one word. I just posted the article. Do you believe in freedom of the press, of speech, of thought, of the right for people to obtain information that is not simply propaganda for the U.S.? How will you know when your country is doing the right thing or the wrong thing? Or do you care? Do you support every evil thing the U.S. has ever done simply because it is your country? I find that point of view as puzzling as you probably find mine.
