My father never wanted to talk about it. I finally made him tell me about it when I was in college, so that I could write it down for my future children. I'm so glad I did.

I knew he was scarred by the war. He came out of it a heavy drinker, and he had nightmares almost every night of his life. I slept on the same side of the house as he did, and he'd often wake me up screaming in his sleep. My mother was a lighter sleeper so she slept on the other side of our house. But even though I was a heavy sleeper he still woke me up sometimes.
