Yep, we've gotten this way because we know, in our heart of hearts that we're slipping in economic growth, in oil production, in power and influence in the world. The ascendancy of the Republican party of hate and suspicion is a sure sign of our descent into second class country status. It's almost impossible to believe that we're fighting FUNDAMENTALIST NITWITS for the right to privacy, the right to science in schools and the right to be intelligent human beings instead of blithering theocratic idiots.
