Having lived in the LA area and visited New Zealand myself, I must agree with you: Definitely insane! -VBG-

That reminds me that my sister told me that, when I went to Taiwan for grad work after college here, my mom was really worried that I actually would end up spending the rest of my life in Taiwan or Hong Kong and that she wouldn't get to see me but once a year at most.

From what I've been told, the N. coast of N. Zealand has a climate like S. Cal., without the traffic and population. I've had that fantasy myself.
