The rightwing use of the term "socialist" is dishonest. Every developed country in the world is more or less socialist and many of them are doing a lot better than we are on all kinds of levels. The US is also partly socialist.

What socialist means is, on health care for instance, that instead of letting drug companies and HMO's make fat profits (their lobbyists also corrupting congress), the government runs the programs on a non-profit basis. Studies have shown the government has a much cleaner record for efficiency and cost-savings, though of course nothing is perfect. Rich people will always be able to buy whatever care they want. The 40 million uninsured in this country are really a tax on all of us as we help pay for them whether we like it or not.
