Its also no secret that BMW is unhappy with labor at its plant in ALA. Its also no secret that the GOP governor of ALA tried to raise taxes in order to improve the quality of life in ALA particularly education.

Alabama does not equal the US. Its just a small subset of the US. Any comparison of the US and its competitiveness and its education spending, to other countries should look at the whole US not just ALA. That having been said, Alabama's funding per student is about the same as the Canadian average.

Thank you for conceding the point. In light of that point the relevance of Krugman's article to the general economy of the US seems to be very low.
