My take on the NYT and the WaPo is that they ATTEMPT to present unbiased news, and have a tradition of presenting facts.

Bill knows where I'm coming from with these rather cryptic comments; we've had this discussion the proverbial ad nauseum times.

Short version of my thinking is that all news reporting is interpretive--selective frames and all that. And all good journalists have a commitment to getting the story right, independent of any interpretation they may bring to it or political loyalties they may have. Ditto for good newspapers. And the NYTimes is certainly one. I don't read the Washington Post regularly so I can't seriously comment there.

Ideologically grounded papers and media either downplay the "getting the story right" portion of their work or simply consider it irrelevant. It's all, in their view, only about politics. And thus they fall into the trap of becoming simply PR adjuncts for parties. I can think of no large newspaper that is presently in the Dem camp in that way. Whereas it's transparent that the Washington Times, Fox News, and the editorial pages of the WSJ are.

What I like about the NYTimes is their recent introspection in an attempt to do their work better; their far better reporting staff; their very insightful commentators such as Krugman and Frank Rich; and their reach.

Now do I like everything in the Times? Nope. Much to critique.

Them's my thoughts.
