The news section of the Wall Street Journal is quite good, although it does not claim to cover all the news that is fit to print.

Well, I wouldn't go that far myself. Too much of it reads like reprinted corporate PR. But if you have in mind their investigative journalism staff, then I entirely agree. They are first rate.

Several years back, more than five now, one of my reporter friends listened as I did a rant about the WSJ. And then informed me that I really was over exaggerating. We clearly agreed about the editorial page but the investigative staff was first rate. I continued to argue, as is my wont but started reading the WSJ more seriously. Since this also occurred around the time my wife and I started handling a good bit of our own investment/pension money. And my reporter friend, I learned, was absolutely right. Many times, many times, they do a much better job than the NYTimes. And, of late, that's more true than the reverse.

Though in the competition for best book on Enron, the NYTimes reporter clearly won that one.
