re:Other generals including but not limited to Nimitz, MacArthur and Eisenhower represented a different opinion.

Yes - the Commander and Chief made a choice we live with today. The fact is it did exactly what Truman wanted it to do, end the war quickly.

As a nation we adhere to the maxim, put forward in the film Patton, that the object is not to die for one's country, it's to make the other poor son of a bitch die for his.

Oh my God! When in doubt, fall on the sword and spout macho BS.

Give me a moment.......I'll see what war movie is on the tube so you can get it out of your system. ;~)

No doubt, the sudden act of aggression by Stalin declaring war on Japan just 2 days after Hiroshima no doubt contributed to Truman's decision to drop the 2nd bomb.
By stating an example of warning against any ideas of further action Stalin may have in Western Europe or Asia.
Didn't prevent him from moving in on and occupy the Japanese Northern Territory of 4 islands north of Hokkaido just 2 weeks later though.
No doubt Truman had to make up for some of the naive dealings by ailing FDR falling for the charms of ole Joe.
