Growing up in England, my Dad had a couple of real economy cars. The first one he bought about 1970 was a Mini-van. i.e. the Austin Mini in van form. It had an 850cc engine. Then he got windows and a set put in the back and he had the cheapest station wagon possible. About 1980 he got a special high fuel economy version of the Metro which was the successor to the Mini. It had a 1 litre engine.

In Europe and Japan economy cars are very popular of course, but they don't cut out the basic amenities anymore. Technological change I think means you can get more fuel efficiency out than before without completely slashing weight etc. And higher safety standards probably also mean more weight.

In Israel they made air conditioning a requirement to reduce accidents. They believed that hot drivers were dangerous drivers :)

Australia is a land of big cars. The average engine size on sedans is bigger than in the US I think. Top selling models have 3.8 litres. In Europe 1.3-1.6 would be best selling.

Scion, Honda Element, the low end Hyundais, Ford Escort and replacement, the Ford Focus, Dodge Neon. Pretty low initial cost, good mileage, available in various levels of accessories.

Today, more people live in places like Arizona and Florida where air conditioning is a real good idea.
