That means the "liberal Democrats" getting media time are almost all secular.

I think the key here is "self-identify." Catholics who are pro-choice probably self-identify as being strong believers, nevertheless, as do Southern Baptists who believe in evolution.

Some people wear their religion on their sleeves and others don't. I don't think you can assess people's religious convictions by their public personas. Evangelicals may not consider spirituality a personal matter but many others do.
