Most academics say that interdisciplinarity is good, but they don't do it. Or they think it is impossible to combine different approaches in the one person and only a team of narrow specialists can make progress. They get very dogmatic about that. I guess they are a bit defensive :) I'm not as skilled as them in any particular area but can take an approach from one discipline and apply it in another and see what happens...

Actually a lot of these economists are in their 50s-70s. They were saying the same things in the 1970s as they are now. Probably age though doesn't have a lot to do with it.
