The excursion does have 4wd low.

My 2005 also came outfitted with skid plates, 10 ply, E-rated tires (the most overlooked off-road accessory is tires.), huge disc brakes, heavy suspension, and the 6.0L power-stroke.

It goes anywhere I point it, and will tow 11,000 pounds straight uphill to boot. The extra wheelbase length and width make it stable as a mule on the mountain logging trails I currently drive. The center of gravity is relatively low and well-centered. It has none of the rollover characteristics of jeeps and other small SUVs.

It is big enough to carry gear and camping equipment for a rifle squad. And on a rainy night you can sit in the back seat and watch DVD movies as you sip a beer and munch popcorn. With the third seat removed and the second row folded flat, there is 8'+ to stow gear and easily sleep two.

I met several Montana and Wyoming outfitters at an event at the Coeur d'Alene resort last year. All of them drove in in excursions with brush guards, large roof racks, and light kits. They told me they found no better all-around off-road vehicle. Naturally, I had to have one.

I do know the Rubicon Trail...hiked it several times when I lived in Incline Village. There are tougher trails at Tahoe. Try hiking or driving up and down the trails on the Southwest side of Mount Rose.

I probably wouldn't take it on the Rubicon trail either......I don't think it's suited for your kind of off roading, but I've used low low on many occasions.
