Of course, it was Europe that was financing us.

My knowledge of 19th century history is much sketchier than I'd like. I have a very vague idea that the US practiced mercantilism until pretty far into the 19th century, and that European investments didn't get going until the railroad era.

Which, as you know, shared a lot in common with the dotcom era.
