elmatador Re: "2 1/2 crops" Because you have a dry season and a wet season there and only ONE of each per year for most non- irrigated crops you can only get one crop per year, just like in the temperate regions.

In tropical Asia (Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia) where they plant corn they could get two or three crops per year but in practice you get only one crop per year. You have to plant at the end of the rainy season when soil moisture is high and this only happens once per year. Same for Brazil. Now irrigated crops like rice you get two or even three in the tropics.

You only get one crop of oranges per year also and if we could get away with paying workers as little as Brazil does your advantage in Oranges would dissappear. And as for ethanol your sugar cane requires a large nitrogen input just like corn. Tropical sun there doesn't change a thing.

elmatador Re: "tropical sun" Even though the radiation density is less in the temperate growing regions like the USA corn belt, during the peak of the growing season we have many more hours of it each day. At the equator you have the same amount of daylight/darkness each day year round. Sun up at six and sunset at six, roughly. In Ohio at midsummer it is still bright at nine. This largely cancels any advantage from higher radiation density nearer the equator for many crops.
