Elmat, my hats off to the full of fun, diligent, ingenious Brazilians, truly, and doing it to the Central Bank, much more direct than Maestro Greensputin. There ought to be a movie made about this job ... superb, clean, and ... words do not suffice ... the Return on Investment, on Equity, and on Asset must be fantstic, and should it turn out that these guys financed the job by borrowing from the bank, too funny.

Brazil's biggest bank heist nets 65 mln usd
08.08.2005, 10:47 PM

BRASILIA (AFX) - Thieves tunneled into a Brazilian Central Bank branch to steal 65 mln usd, officials said. The country's biggest-ever bank heist was one of the largest in the world.

Thieves penetrated the Banco Central branch in the northeastern city of Fortaleza over the weekend after digging an 80-meter tunnel, the bank said in a statement.

They carted out 13.5 tons in notes without setting off alarms, police said.

'There were movement sensors in the safe and security cameras, which were not activated,' police said.

Police said the thieves appeared to have made off with at least 65 mln usd.

The robbers operated from a nearby house where they created a fictitious gardening company, which allowed them to get rid of earth they dug without raising suspicion, police said. The tunnel was four meters underground.

Police speculated that the gang must have had about 20 members, but did not immediately say that they had questioned any suspects.

'They worked for several months,' police said. 'The gardening company was working since March. They had sophisticated equipment, including (global positioning systems) and experts in math, engineering and excavation,' they said.

The Brazil robbery is topped by a 1987 robbery in Knightsbridge, central London, of 72 million dollars.
