FWIW, the thief hanging alongside was told by Christ that "today you will be with me in Paradise". He apparently wasn't baptized, and it's not clear what good works he did (although speaking up for Christ might have counted!)

You are correct about baptism. The justification argument is frankly beyond me. Lutherans say justification is by faith alone period. When I have listened to Catholic authorities discuss it, they begin by saying justification is by faith alone but ..... and after 15 minutes I lose track of the argument.

The other big issue keeping Lutherans and Catholics apart is the whole apostolic structure of the church and the Pope's preeminent position in it.
