It seems that the number of potential applications is flat huge, much more than in mobile telephony. Of course, the ASP and the profit per device is tiny. Still, at a royalty rate of 2.5% to 7% [a very odd range btw], the cash could pile up quickly.

The end of piracy or a good whack at it is one of the benefits, though I am not sure that RFID products are themselves exempt.

If they manage to exact IP royalies from chip-makers, there'd be a "razor blade" annuity from disposable tags. Texas Instruments, Philips.
