But this was a real inexpensive "no name" model, but looked to be very well made. What caught my eye was the "made in China" engine, the first one I have seen in the US. It appears to be a copy of a Briggs, their current OHV model, not an older flat head design. Could be made by one of those "hungry entrepreneurs" that Jay mentions as a knock-off of the Briggs engine. Go look in the "small engine" section of a Northern Hydraulics" retail store. They carry about every brand of small engine available in the US, and last time I looked (a month ago) none of them were from China. You have the "de-lux" models; Robin, Honda and Kawasaki, all made in Japan. Then you have the lower cost brands, Briggs and Tecumseh and USA made Honda. Thats in the little engines. I think they carry Onan (USA made)along with Briggs in the bigger twin cylinder models. The US brands started phasing out their larger (16hp and up) flat head engines about 1995 in anticipation of emissions requirements and replacing them with new OHV designs. But they all (except Honda) still have flat heads in the smaller (12hp and under) models. Heck, Robin still has a small smokey two stroke in their line. I know there have been some California emissions requirements for years but as for any comprehensive federal regs, I really don't think so. If they did it would be impossible to sell the two stroke and all these leaf blowers and weed eaters. They are as smokey as a chain saw. You still have push lawnmowers with flat heads. You see Chinese made small engines all over Asia, just not here. I have been wondering when they would arrive and I believe they have, via a no-name Walmart generator. Well made looking rig though.
