So far the hallmarks of the Bush presidency are mendacity and incompetence. If Bush wants to improve his image he needs to address these two traits.

My advice would be simple: be honest and demonstrate competency.

As an example, when Bush talks about Social Security he should acknowledge that the potential problem is solvency in the long term. Private accounts have nothing to with solvency and are instead how Bush thinks things should be. Yes, private accounts would then be history, but that is OK ... remember the goal is to improve his image by being honest.

Next Bush needs to demonstrate competency. Basically every Bush program so far has turned to excrement. So what Bush should do is: 1) announce a detailed plan for Iraq that stops the loss of life. Deliver on this plan with a clear time table. 2) announce a detailed plan on restoring fiscal responsibility to the Federal Government. Deliver on this plan.

Both of these will require a year or two to show progress, but until Bush delivers he should propose no new initiatives. After he demonstrates honesty and competence his image will improve.

Be honest. Demonstrate competence. Good advice for everyone.
