There is no doubt in my mind that they were hoping for an all out race riot right there on the New Haven green. National news!

PETA cares about press because they are trying to change the way people think about animals. They are pretty uninterested in perpetuating their own existence except for the good they do for animals, and if you look at their financial statements, which are public, they really have a very low rate of administrative costs. Most of the money they collect is designated for a variety of animal programs.

I got this in my email today. It is an example of something PETA is trying to do that is very positive--ending the custom of mulesing sheep in Australia and New Zealand. This is something PETA is involved in that is good because it really cuts down the agony lambs endure from mulesing, which is basically cutting all the skin and off the sheeps' bottoms with scissors, which causes them to be in pain for several months. A lot of them die of shock from the procedure. PETA is also getting agreements from the wool producers so that when the sheep are sent to the Middle East on ships to be sold for meat (and have their throats slit), the conditions on the ships will at least be humane for them:

Groundbreaking Agreement Reached Between PETA and Australian Wool Group Over Mulesing Mutilations of Lambs and Live-Sheep Exports

After nearly a year of demonstrations and campaigning to end mulesing mutilations of lambs and live-sheep exports in Australia, a historic agreement was signed yesterday by the Australian Wool Growers Association and PETA. This agreement, if ratified by sheep farmers throughout Australia, will establish a time frame for ending mulesing by 2010 and require either that live-export standards for sheep comply with Australian welfare standards governing the care of domestic animals or that live-exports be phased out by 2010.

To give other wool-industry bodies time to review the proposal, PETA has called for a 45-day moratorium on the Australian Wool and Benetton campaigns. For more information, please visit SaveTheSheep.com.
