My father fits the description perfectly. Still wearing clothes he bought 30 years ago. Unless he really concentrates on dressing for church or something similar, he could easily be mistaken for a homeless person.

Did always drive a pretty decent car, because he never wanted the hassle of repairing an old one. And is fairly generous with his family in terms of buying dinners out somewhere. But other than that, he's an incredible tightwad and just keeps piling up more money in the bank and his brokerage account every day.

I wouldn't call him a hoarder of money on purpose. He just doesn't see any pleasure in spending it.

Two rules for dealing with this man:

-- do NOT deny him his Sunday newspaper with the grocery store ads, because he wouldn't sleep at night suspecting he paid a penny when he could have saved that penny by buying something on sale.

--do not EVER expect him to sell a stock and pay all that tax to Uncle Sam. One time he got forced into selling some bank stock he'd had for years and had to pay a 5-figure tax bill. We still haven't heard the end of that rant and never will.
