Standardized testing does not make you smarter, and doesn't do much for the upper third of the students.

However, it will test if Johnny can multiply and divide, or solve word problems like " a truck can carry 6000 pounds. How many 1400 pound boxes can the truck carry ?"

When Johnny does score well, he can go through math class again.

I'm picking the truck example because it has obvious public safety implications.

The standardized testing at earlier grades also highlights kids who are falling behind early enough that most of them can catch up.

I believe that the testing in California has made a positive difference.

Of course, California is an exception. How many times have you had to deal with people who can't make change in a transaction ? That rarely happens in the North East US. I don't think it happens in Hong Kong. But it happens a lot here in La-La land.
