Not just guns - we have issues with the government any time it looks like they're spying or collecting information on us - look at the debate over the patriot act and library books. We have a basic distrust of government and power - that's why we have checks and balances written into the constitution.

re:We register cars without a problem

Concealed carry is a more apt comparison as you carry a concealed weapon in public - we operate cars on public roads with others in close proximity. All states that allow concealed carry require a permit - some require training and refresher classes, some don't. PS: You can have an unregistered car parked in your yard - it's when it goes onto the road.

Of course and they use the fact that other nations created lists and used them to confiscate weapons. It's also information I don't want criminals to get - no need to provide them a shopping list with addresses.
