I don't think that is an accurate prediction for global warming. What people are usually saying is that because temperatures ona ny one day can fall along a bell shaped curve, as the curve moves to the right to higher temperatures the percent increase in extreme hot days is large. The percent decline of extreme cold days would also be large.

There does seem to have been a reduction in the daily temperature range. Maybe be partly due to urbanization near weather stations but also increased cloudiness at night. So nights are warmer. Minima have increased on average more than maxima.

The average temperature is important for some of the potentially big impacts of climate change: ice sheet melting and sea level rise.
