You ought to be able to analyze this question considering your background. Have you any ideas or assumptions? Can't say that I've given it any study. My sense has been that it was a result of the sense of alienation and and resentment felt by social conservatives as things moved away from them, their wanting a forum to commiserate and validate themselves. There was no need for that on the left because the left was in the driver's seat. Rather like the way we have Jewish or black or redneck humorists but not WASP humorists.
