Bush signs $286bn transport bill

Mr Bush signed the law in a ceremony at a Caterpillar plant
President George W Bush has signed into law a $286bn (£159bn) transportation bill which he says will create jobs and boost America's economy.

"We have to make sure our highways are modern," he said at the signing.

The projects - spread throughout the country - include $450m for two bridges in sparsely populated Alaska and $2.3m for landscaping along the Ronald Reagan highway in California,

There is also funding for a snowmobile trail, a deer-avoidance system and something described as "dust control mitigation" on rural roads in Arkansas.
