It was our CIA that helped Saddam assume and maintain power. The CIA is not a liberal institution, not matter who controls Congress or the Presidency.

re: "... because it was in fact the conservative wing of America that helped install and supported Saddam while he was a brutal dictator..."

Blame the NeoCons? When the Baathists came to power in Iraq, it was 1968 (a relative of his, took power). In 1968, the Democrats controlled the Congress, Senate and the Presidency. When Saddam formally came to power in 1979, at the time Democrats controlled the Congress, Senate and Presidency - you calling Jimmy Carter and LBJ the "conservative wing of America"??

I don't know whether the US played a role in Saddam getting into power but I do know that Reagan et al supported him all through the 1980s. Given those facts, why are you trying to make the argument partisan? It doesn't matter to the Iranians whether Reagan was GOP or not. He was an American and its Americans who invaded Iraq, not Republicans. Its the questionable policies of Reagan and Bush who are giving all Americans a bad name. So instead of attacking a fellow American why don't you go after the real culprits......the real problem? They are in Washington, DC, not on this SI thread.
