I think people pick groups that they want to belong to, and identify with those groups, and that groups have group identifications that are self-reinforcing.

Obviously in some societies there are fewer groups to choose from than in others. Also accidents of birth can limit choices.

I can't choose to be a member of New York society, but if I were born into New York society, I might choose to go off to Paris to paint, or to India to live in an ashram, rather than do the expected, make my debut, and join my place in society.
