The numbers get pretty astronomical if you can compound at a high rate for say 20 years. The flippers and highly leveraged taking chances in bubble markets today certainly didn't make a fortune already the old fashioned way or they wouldn't doing it<g>.

As for Buffet hasn't his return been pretty anemic since 1998? He pretty much rode the two bull markets of his day but what impressed me was his high percentage gains during the stagnant market of the 1970's that set him apart from the crowd.
