I'm torn between the Marxist-derived Cultural Materialism and a more Idealist Durkheim-ish explanation. If Durkheim didn't fall into mysticism, he might have been spot-on. I did a major research paper in college on Durkheim's Division of Labor, which is a masterpiece. Anthropology disservices itself by ignoring his early work.

Who do you have in mind for the cultural materialism arguments?

I agree with the assessment of Durkheim's Division of Labor book but Suicide and his book on religion (title escapes me as I type) were important influences for me. The interesting thing about Division of Labor, as you may recall, is that Durkheim saw it as a major critique of Smithian economics.

Durkheim's Division of Labor

You and John can have him. Reads like a dense theologian to me. www2.pfeiffer.edu
