I got jumped by a gang for having a Yankee accent in Port Arthur,Tx in 1942. God help me if I had sat out the pledge.

My youngest refused. 6th or 7th grade. Middle school. In rural central Pa. Derek's world. I showed up with the constitutional arguments so the school admin types had to back off. Plus she was the most popular kid in the class. Almost talked the whole class into doing it.

However, a year later, when she and a friend tried to integrate the boy's soccer team during lunch, they beat on her and her friend. The middle school sup told me it was just boys being boys. Told him I was going to get him fired. Almost got it done.

For the longest I couldn't understand why I failed since all the other school administrators include the head of the system was sympathetic. Turned out he was the nephew of a very powerful, local Rep judge.

LB, Port Arthur is more like Louisiana than Texas. With a yankee accent, Texans would have just laughed at you.
