Absolutely demand was increasing. All commodity prices were rising. This made OPEC's job all the easier.

My consciousness of World news really starts around 1973 with the Yom Kippur War, though I can remember TV news broadcasts that impressed me from before then. One was in 1969 when I was 4 years old! There was a gas explosion in an apartment building in London and the whole corner of the building collapsed like 20 stories. I remember lots of news broadcasts on the Vietnam war. I wondered what parallels were :) There was always bombing north and south of a parallel.

I'm already sounding like an old man :P
