I wonder if it's cheaper to buy the printer just to get the re-fill ink cartridges, than it would be to buy the cartridges.

If you get the printer during a promotion this is true. I use this fact to rationalize buying cheap cartridges. If they end up clogging the print head beyond repair, so what? Just buy a new printer and still save on the cartridges. That's exactly what happened with an Epson Stylus c84 I bought cheap. Replaced the black cartridge with a cheapy, no problem. Later replaced a color one and the printer was toast.

But instead of buying a new Epson, I bought the Canon IP 3000, which I like better. So far I've only replaced the black cartridge. We'll see what happens when it's time for color. I'm hoping shadowman is right about Canon being more conducive to substituting generics. I've also switched replacement cartridge companies. Trying 123 inkjets.

Shadowman, I highly recommend the IP 3000. Two paper sources is very handy and duplex printing is cool. I've been very happy with photo printing as well, despite only four cartridges. I think your student beneficiary will be pleased.
