I have copied and kept my favorite posts and exchanges from the old days because I worried about that happening. There isn't much in the last few years that I follow.
How many CD's would such an enormous amount of material cover?
I guess I probably wouldn't buy something since I just copy something I like when I see it.

Seems to me your interest is probably only thread oriented, ie there are specific thread that you what to preserve locally. Therefore what you may want to look into is acquiring a small thread read engine that would take the name of the thread and then go read each and ever post and while it reads the post at the same time it would copies it contents to disk on your own system... Assuming 21.6 million post, you would probably only what 10% or less preserved, so your read engine would have to scan through for all these then periodically search for additional post remember where it left off last pass.

You might run into problems with SI over ownership rights to copy this amount of data.
