9/11 PANEL: ATTA TALE WAS BUM TIP By DEBORAH ORIN Washington Bureau Chief August 13, 2005 -- The 9/11 commission yesterday defended its decision to ignore a Navy officer's report that military spies targeted lead hijacker Mohamed Atta more than a year before the attacks — and claimed the Navy man wasn't "sufficiently credible." The statement from commission chiefs Tom Kean and Lee Hamilton came after a flip-flop, in which the panel's staff first denied and then admitted it was told Pentagon spies had linked Atta to an al Qaeda cell in New York in 2000. That revelation touched off a firestorm because the Navy officer reportedly said military spies in the top-secret Able Danger program were barred from telling the FBI of their finding — a move that might have caught Atta. "The [Navy officer] had no documentary evidence and said he had only seen the document briefly some years earlier. He could not describe what information had led to this supposed Atta identification," the commission said. "The commission's staff concluded that the officer's account was not sufficiently reliable to warrant revision of the report or further investigation." A skeptical Rep. Curt Weldon (R-Pa.) said the statement does nothing to answer why the Able Danger warning wasn't passed on to the FBI.

As for Able Danger, there is not enough on the table yet to make strong claims about it. You must not have been reading my posts on it. Thomas Kean and vice chairman Lee Hamilton first claimed on Monday that they had never heard of it. Then they admitted on Wednesday that they had. Yesterday they responded in a detailed exposition what they say went on. They went from "what?" to "we heard it all and it wasn't believeable" in five days. They are obviously in full coverup mode. This is getting big. BTW, the AP finally broke the Air America story. Mentioned AA in the first paragraph as taking money from widows and orphans. The NYT version didn't mention AA until the 6th paragraph and ran it on A-14. Both the AP and the NYT waited 4 weeks to run it. You constantly complain that I am paranoid about the NYT. All I do is post the facts.
