JDN, When Villa teamed up with Zapata, they became the big generals of the Mexican Revolution. Villa marched south to Mexico City, and Zapata marched north, where they met and got Benito Juarez instated as El Presidente.

Before that, they were considered to be bandits that didn't care where they raided. Villa crossed the line into the US so many times, that the army was dispatched, under the leadership of Black Jack Pershing to catch, and arrest him, but as I recall the American Army could not catch him.

Your Great Uncle was lucky to get away alive.
