"Hard to say who is worse, especially if one party happens to coincide with your ideology more than the other." As a Joneser, all politicians are an indictment away from an unplanned vacation. Neither party is worse than the other, it all revolves around circumstance. Given that the Republicans had their birth in the the anti-slavery movement, they might be the most cynical of the two. OTOH, the Democrats coopted the Populists...
