They store the same about today as they did then, 700mb. It's not just the messages, but several dozen support tables and all of the indexes.
I'll have to take your word on that. Yeah, the text or contents is only part of a relational database, something I didn't take into account.

As someone else pointed out, there's very little use for a static database when a searchable realtime one is available.
Well, Dave, surely you would include search in this? :-)

THe scenario being addressed is lights out for SI. Currently, posting rate is about 1 megaposts/yr. SI came into existence in 1996. That means current post count should be 9 megaposts- -but it's actually over 21 megaposts. This a clear indication that posting activity has dropped significantly from what it was. Enough of a drop and the business is no longer viable.

Now the stock market has also dropped, but the DJII has almost recovered (picking different measures will give different mileage). Basically, as a stock site, you are in a highly cyclical business. Many stock businesses have been killed by this. If you got the capital ride out the bad times of unpredictable length, you're OK. Otherwise.......

And the other consideration is that the same capital could give better, more reliable returns in other businesses.
