Economic thinking vs. engineering thinking :) The institutionalist economist Commons had something to say about that.... Anyway. Remember to add in the cost of the whole supply chain from China to the US store into the price charged here. Plus the opportunity cost of that retail space here... called rent... and tax too support all those public services and... The answers to a lot of these questions are here (though most SI-ers don't believe any of this): bea.gov Specifically here: bea.gov But they changed all the definitions of industries in 1998 which screwed everything up.
