Energy is highly fungible, the use of one type of energy affects the price of all energy.

The fuels most often used for producing electricity are coal and natural gas. If coal or natural gas prices rise a little too much, electrical power generators can change back to oil at a modest cost.

Once a magical infinite source of electrical generation is created, such as a fusion reactor, then oil, coal, and natural are no longer relevant as an energy source.

Until that new energy source is in place, replacing gasoline cars with electric cars will use even more oil than gasoline cars.
