I've encountered a grizz. Up in Alaska, about 25 years ago. I was backpacking in Denali with my bud, and while in the process of taking our food down from a tree, looked over at a sandbar to see what I thought was porcupine. Turned out to be the first of 2 griz cubs. Mama not far behind. Food went back up, as they crossed the creek about 100 yards above us. Whew.
Also, had several losing encounters with Yosemite garbage bears.
