I agree its not much of a choice but they went for the strong hardliner hook, line and sinker. You see they are worried that the US plans to invade them. Everything I read on their choice of the hard hard liner versus the soft hard liner said they picked the hard hard guy because he was an honest competent leader in terms of jobs and fighting corruption. There were plenty of articles on his election in the local press over hear. The soft hard liner had a history of corruption from his earlier tenure in the top slot. I read the same thing here......that one of the reasons was as you describe above. However, another reason given was that they liked he would take a hard line with the US.You see they are worried that the US plans to invade them. So just like in America where the hardliner, GW Bush, got re elected...the Iranians when for their equivalent. Your ignorance is coming out again and you're making stuff up. Really. Its interesting how you make your assertions with nothing to back you up. Do you always argue this way?Do you realize 50% of Iranians are 25 years old or less, and most Iranians LIKE the USA? Yes and no. You are a bit out of date. Did you read the article I posted about two months ago on SI? I think it was from the NY Times. Apparently, not. It talked about how many of the young were pro American prior to 9/11. However, after 9/11 two things have changed those feelings to some degree..........the first was the attack on Iraq; the second was the Ayatollahs buying them off.......they gave them some freedoms, let them listen to the music they like etc......the result is that they have become rather apathetic. The guy writing the article was an Iranian American who was in Iran in the late 90s and was active in the push for democracy. He was very disappointed in the change in attitude. If you have access to the so called SI search engine, do a search and read the article. Here's another one..........the story line is somewhat different but it too presents a mixed picture of where the Iranians are:csmonitor.com It's only the crusty old men (who most of the Iranians DISLIKE) that have the concerns you describe. If the Iranian people's collective will were allowed to express itself, they would quickly become allies of America. You are an Ameriphile and a State Dept'employee so I think your POV may be a bit biased. Besides, they may love Americans and hate Bush.........foreigners always seem to make that distinction between Americans and their gov't. Read the two articles I mentioned.......you might not be so convinced of your position. I definitely am not. Maybe Mani might show up and tell us what he's heard. Maybe he will prove me wrong. It's a small, select few (as I said, crusty old men) who prevent the Iranian majority from achieving what you like to call "a country's manifest destiny". On the contrary, those crusty old men think they are achieving Iran's manifest destiny just as our crusty old men think that's what they're doing for America. I would wager a bet that neither is doing what they think they are doing.Do you realize it is illegal to dance in public in Iran? Most humans like to dance, you know, weddings, parties, etc. The law comes from these crusty old unelected mullahs, the same mullahs who are disliked by the majority of the Iranian population. I think these mullahs should be destroyed. You seem to think they should be given access to nuclear weaponry. LOL. Right. I hate people who dance because I suck at it. I love religious conservatives.......I think they are the best people on the planet. Of course, you are wrong..........as you have been from day one about me.........in fact, you don't have a clue where I am. And that's because your hatred of me is coloring your interpretation of what I write. Didn't anyone teach you that you don't interact with someone in anger or hatred, and still expect to win the argument? Perhaps I'll just stop suggesting that you advocate things rather than just complain, because your suggestions are extremely dangerous and not very well thought out. Stick to whining and complaining, because you seem to have that down to an art. More dangerous than invading a country like Iraq, encouraging an insurgency and potentially kicking off a civil war? Why don't you do a back flip and disappear into your own asshole, o brilliant one? Was that one of your answers on a test or something? No, that's what I am asking you to do......asap.
