When a cop holds the flashlight above his head, he holds it with the flash end coming out from his little fingers, not the from this thumb and forefinger. His hand is right behind the flash.

That's just how I was visualizing it.

If he strikes down from that position, his hand reverses and the butt end of the flash is now in front. So he hits with the butt.

My hand won't do that. My hand naturally chops down pinkie first, which means flashlight head end first. If I try to twist my hand so the butt end comes down first, my arm won't go anywhere but across my body and I end up hitting myself in the stomach, which is neither the best offensive nor defensive move. <g>

My grandfather spent his "retirement" as a security guard at TRW - had one of those big-ass maglights, for just that reason. I'd hate to get clubbed with one of those things.
