Don, re "It was the SHAREHOLDERS, not the company itself, who sacrificed to make the grants in the first place." Exactly, but actions of the company cause that to happen. That shareholders might vote for a stock (or option) program is irrelevant. Value ... real money ... is transferred directly from shareholders to employees, but it's equivalent to a transfer of $X from shareholders to the company ... and then that same $X from the company to employees.
