If he were bored with the conversation, he could have simply said, near the top of the discussion, "I take your point about the vastly superior firepower and readiness of the Soviets but I think that is obviated by their reluctance to use them given the consequences," a reasonable position that I could respect, and perhaps what he has in mind, and we would have been done.

Instead he chose to duck and misdirect my probing on that point through what must be four or five rounds by now. I find that curious. What did he have to gain from that?

If it didn't happen so often in discussions hereabouts, I might not pursue it. And if I didn't think he was apt enough to give me an explanation for a phenomenon that's been bemusing me, I might not pursue it. As as far as everyone being bored, I'm sorry, I'm long since bored with the original question, too, but the question about discussion behavior has been bugging me for a very long time and I hate to abandon one of the more promising leads I've had.
