The economic research community uses the numbers the government puts out, but also collects some data itself (it is hard to compete with the government in monitoring the macro economy) and does a lot of research on all these issues about whether the numbers are reliable etc. The only people who could hve some secret numbers are internal government departments - treasury and Fed. I don't know what they have access to. So economic researchers outside government have access to the same macro data as the general public. Most of it is on the web for free now.
