Steve, I didn't hear anything about gasoline not being subject to the tax increase they're pushing and that will hurt the working stiffs much more than the limousine crowd. The rich won't pay taxes on their boats because they will buy them overseas and anchor them in The Caymans most of the time. Ditto for their planes. Food and meds will be taxed eventually. This plan is just to get the camel's nose under the tent, and then everything will be hit. They can't raise enough money without taxing necessities.

We have a strange situation here in Texas that illustrates how governments think. We have a tax free weekend, which was set up so parents could afford to buy back to school stuff for kids. But the way it really works is, I go to Needless Markup for my Kiton ties and Bruno Magli shoes and I get a tax break. Backpacks at Walmart are taxed. These things never get to anything approaching equity.

Yes, the income tax should be greatly simplified. Get rid of the mortgage interest deduction, AMT, and all the special interest crap (people with pet oppossums can deduct $3 from their gross, etc. <G>). There is no reason why a high school graduate should have to hire an outside tax preparer or spend more than 15 minutes filing.

The acid test as to whether a tax favors the wealthy or the working class is to see who is touting it. This sales tax is 100% backed by the Neocons, and anything they do is pro wealthy, pro giant corporations and anti workers and small businesses.
