Your memory is NOT faulty, the US and the UN opposed settlements in the Gaza. Incidentally, I understand they are destroying all the homes there as they leave. I think that was foolish. Could have sold them to Palistinians, even if for a song would have raised some money, if not sell gift them. Damn shame to destroy pefectly good homes, some I saw were really nice. jdn

The US is paying everybody off there, Israel is asking for some too. They won't get so much, but they will get some.

As for destroying the houses, they are no use to the Palestinians, who either would destroy them themselves, dancing on Jewish rubble, or give them to Arafat's cronies. It's better to destroy them, which gives the chance of something useful being built instead. Of course building things is not the PA's strong suit, but in this case they'll get the EU or somebody else to do it for them.
