He has a large conduit for his poor research and whacked opinions. Without that conduit, he'd be relegated to guest columns, occasional TV appearances, and his own blog that he'd force his poor students to read. He'd be about as influential as Susan Estridge.

It's easy to argue he is the most influential columnist of our times.

The first NYT public editor had such a problem with Krugman's misstatements that he made it a central part of his farewell article. Both Dowd and Krugman have blogs that fisk them on a regular basis. "Dowdification" has entered the lexicon as a description for altered quotes. Herbert is just laughed at. I don't bother to post the constant fisks of Rich because nobody here pays any attention to him.
